Guest Lecture by Professor Dragan Bagić: Politicization of migration: analytical framework and examples from Croatia

The politicization of migration has become a defining political phenomenon across Europe over the last decade. Its effects are far-reaching: contributing to the rise of populism, the success of radical right-wing parties, deepening societal polarization, and the widespread questioning of liberal democracy and the future of the European Union. This phenomenon becomes especially critical when a populist type of migration politicization is present. As Croatia is in the process of a migration transition—from an emigration country to an immigration country—the way migration issues are being politicized is changing. In this lecture, the author will provide an overview of the patterns of this change and will attempt to explain why certain forms of migration politicization have emerged, and why some forms remain absent, despite significant “market potential.” The lecture will combine conceptual discussions with case studies of politicization campaigns and their absence.
